He Oranga Poutama

A Sport New Zealand-led initiative that promotes the development and implementation of play, physical recreation, and sport in ways that are culturally appropriate to Māori. The programme supports Māori wellbeing by encouraging active lifestyles through movement that reflects te ao Māori.

Supporting Māori Wellbeing Through Physical Activity

At Nuku Ora, we’re committed to engaging with and supporting Māori communities to thrive through physical activity.  As part of He Oranga Poutama, we work alongside whānau, hapū, iwi, and Māori organisations to:

  • Build the capabilities of Māori leaders

  • Strengthen Māori sporting and organisational systems

  • Nurture meaningful relationships with iwi and mana whenua

We acknowledge and value the importance of working in partnership with iwi such as Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Te Āti Awa. These partnerships ensure our programmes and services align with iwi aspirations and uphold cultural values.

By collaborating closely, we’re able to share mātauranga, resources, and expertise - creating more relevant and culturally grounded opportunities for Māori to engage in physical activity.

A Collective Approach for
Greater Impact

Our commitment extends across the region, working with a range of iwi and Māori communities. By building strong, trusting relationships, we can better understand diverse needs and co-design initiatives that reflect local aspirations, leading to more meaningful and impactful outcomes for Māori.
