Spaces and Places

Supporting Active Communities

Accessible, well-planned, and sustainable facilities and spaces are essential for people to stay active across the Wellington region. From sports fields to playgrounds, bike tracks to swimming pools - these are the places where sport, recreation, and tākaro (play) happen.

Our role across the rohe:

Our role across the rohe:

  • Regional Leadership: We drive a coordinated approach to facility planning and development through the Regional Spaces and Places Strategy, reports, and activation via the Regional Spaces and Places Steering Group.

  • Advocacy: We champion equitable access, provision of collaborative multi-use spaces, and the environmental and financial sustainability of sport and recreation facilities.

  • Guidance and Support: We work alongside clubs, sports groups, community organisations, schools, and councils to provide expert advice on facility planning and development.

Regional Spaces and Places Steering Group

Nuku Ora facilitates the Regional Spaces and Places Steering Group, working with all eight regional councils and Sport NZ. This group supports and advises on facility projects of regional significance, endorsing those that provide clear community benefits in alignment with the Spaces and Places Strategy.
