“Walking up and down Mt Kaukau”
Being active has always been a big part of my life. From playing sport in my younger years to mountain biking and trail running, I’ve appreciated the holistic benefits that physical activity brings. These days, being active in the outdoors has taken on even more importance to my wellbeing as I learn to navigate life with a spinal cord injury.
I’ve had a long career in the community sport and recreation sector, working across local government and not-for-profit organisations. Prior to this role, I was CEO at Recreation Aotearoa for 11 years.
The journey the organisation has taken over the last few years to become Nuku Ora really appealed to me, especially the strong sense of purpose that drives our mahi every day.

At my age, being active is vitally important to remain strong, healthy, and well for myself and my whānau. More and more these days, physical activity is a way for me to connect with nature and re-energise my mauri.
As a member of the SLT, I help shape the strategic platform that enables our kaimahi and sector partners to support more people across our rohe to be active. I lead the Delivery Team, ensuring we meet outcomes from core contracts with Sport NZ, Health NZ Te Whatu Ora, ACC, and our local Councils. We do this by working both in and on the system across the sport, active recreation, play, and physical activity sectors. Reach out to me if your organisation is looking to partner in improving wellbeing through physical activity.
Previously, I have had over 30 years of experience in council and community management, leading sport, recreation, and health teams and outcomes.
Nuku Ora’s focus on equity and supporting those who face barriers to participation strongly aligns with my own values. Nuku Ora’s bicultural journey is something that has inspired me to embrace my own journey in Te Ao Māori.

“Walking”
To stay active, I love walking the Wellington coastlines - most weekend mornings you'll find me out with our two dogs. Being in the fresh air, surrounded by nature and moving, gives me a deep sense of hauora. I’ve recently rejoined the gym and am absolutely loving my early morning workouts.
As General Manager of Business, I lead the Business Team and support the wider organisation across Finance, HR, Health, Safety and Wellbeing, Communications and Marketing, Insights and Evaluation, and Regional Planning and Development.
Before joining Nuku Ora, I worked in the Early Childhood Education sector as a Business Manager. I was drawn to Nuku Ora because of its purpose, to positively influence lives through physical activity, something I connect with on a personal level. I have two active teenage daughters and love supporting them in their sporting and recreational pursuits.

“Any activity that involves my whānau is what I enjoy the most. These activities can vary from walks on the beach, playing a sport, water fights, or just enjoying the sights of a place we are visiting.”
Physical activity is a powerful way to connect—whether that’s with people, with te taiao, or with ourselves. I enjoy taking on individual challenges that push me to learn more about myself, my limits, and how to navigate through tough situations. Watching my children play sport also brings me immense joy and is a big contributor to my own wellbeing.
At Nuku Ora, my role is all about supporting others to reach their potential in their work environments. By helping communities engage with physical activity, we can make a real, positive impact on overall wellbeing. I feel privileged to work closely with iwi and Māori communities across the Wellington region. I myself am NZ Māori and my iwi is Ngāti Porou.
Before joining Nuku Ora, I spent 15 years working in primary education in a variety of roles, and I have always had an interest in physical activity, education and te ao Māori. But what truly makes Nuku Ora special is the people. I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside a team who genuinely care about each other and their mahi.

“I couldn't narrow it down to just one favourite, but football, golf, cycling, hiking and gym”
Being active is a way of life for me that goes far beyond keeping fit. It boosts my mood, allows me to make new friendships, and is a huge part of who I am. I'm so grateful to be able to promote physical activity and wellbeing for a job.
My role involves supporting our amazing team of facilitators, who make a real difference to school communities through their relational mahi. I also focus on developing and strengthening relationships with like-minded organisations, exploring how to combine our strengths to create maximum positive impact for communities.
Initially, the opportunity to work with school leaders and make long-term, sustainable, positive changes drew me to Nuku Ora and the Healthy Active Learning team. As time has progressed, the strong sense of passion and purpose amongst kaimahi to serve communities, the relationships and connections and regular rewarding experiences are why I enjoy working at Nuku Ora.
I was originally on the path to becoming PE teacher, but a planned one-year travelling hiatus turned into much more! Now over ten years later, I am very settled here in Aotearoa!

As a Healthy Active Learning Facilitator, I’m here to energise and revamp the way we approach physical activity and wellbeing. For me, physical activity helps keep my hauora in balance.
It gives me the chance to connect with all four walls from the Te Whare Tapa Wha model, depending on what activity I’m doing, and offers a break from the busyness of daily life. I enjoy gym classes, getting out in the bush for walks and jumping on a tennis court for a hit around.
As a Healthy Active Learning Facilitator, my role is to positively influence the physical activity and health systems, cultures and processes that support tamariki in our schools, kura and communities. I am currently working in the Porirua and Kāpiti communities, and would love to connect with you!
With a background in teaching, this role is a perfect fit, allowing me to combine my passion for physical activity with my love of working in school settings. I especially enjoy sharing the benefits of being active, promoting active teaching and creating more inclusive events and opportunities for those who may otherwise miss out. Physical activity is a consistent part of my routine, so no matter where I am or how I’m feeling, moving my body helps ground me and brings a sense of purpose and calm. While studying at the University of Otago, I worked as a Research Assistant at New Zealand Rugby. I’m also a Registered Exercise Specialist, with a background in exercise science and a passion for turning that knowledge into practical steps that help people thrive in their health and wellbeing journey. I love helping people reap the benefits of movement in their lives.

"Gym – strength training is my favourite, and walking"
I’ve always loved strength training. I’ve worked in the health and fitness industry since I was 23 years old, as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer, both part-time and full-time, alongside other vocational roles.
Nowadays, as an older woman, I truly believe that physical strength equals confidence! I love the confidence that comes from knowing I can carry my own heavy shopping bags, get up off the floor with ease, carry and play with my 2-year-old moko, or shift heavy furniture using both my upper and lower body in everyday life.
As a GRx Programme Advisor, I believe every whānau, matua, tāne, wāhine, rangatahi, tamariki, and pēpē deserves to be acknowledged as having mana, no matter where they come from. This belief forms the foundation for meaningful and constructive conversations, conversations that empower people to shape their own personal or whānau journeys toward being active and healthy.
I’m simply there to support them with the tools to succeed.

“Swimming”
My favourite way to stay active is swimming and exploring the outdoors through bush walks. I get immense joy from the ocean, the pool, and being outside in the sun.
Physical activity and wellbeing are important to me not just for the physical benefits, but also for the mental — it's a natural mood lifter and a great way to de-stress after a big day. My hauora feels complete when I can enjoy movement, especially with friends and whānau.
I’ve always had a passion for health and community. After completing my Master’s Degree in Advanced Nutrition through Otago University, I joined the Green Prescription team as an Advisor. In this role, I support whānau on their health and wellbeing journey, offering guidance on good nutrition and physical activity, both one-on-one and through group programmes.
I was drawn to Nuku Ora because of our shared belief that everyone should have the opportunity to live a healthy life. “Gym, running and being outdoors”
I love exploring new sports with others – like mountain biking, Spikeball, or tennis - as a fun balance to my regular strength and functional training at the gym or running.
As embodied beings, when our taha tinana (physical wellbeing) is in poor condition, our ability to enjoy life to the fullest is seriously limited. I know that when I'm moving well in response to my environment and the people around me, I feel more alive and show up as a better version of myself.
In my role, I support Green Prescription clients through honest, reflective conversations to make small but significant shifts in their daily movement and eating habits, setting them up for long-term improvements in health and wellbeing.
What I love about Nuku Ora is its holistic approach to empowering nga tāngata to engage in life-giving movement that’s dynamic and deeply connected, not just bound to traditional sport. I was drawn to the organisation’s emphasis on biculturalism and the shared humility to walk that journey together. And, of course, the kaimahi here are good sorts - passionate about their mahi and genuinely committed to helping our communities flourish.

Physical activity is important to me because it supports my body, mind, and wairua. I enjoy the challenge and sense of accomplishment, and it helps me stay grounded. It also creates space to connect with whānau and friends, strengthening our bonds and reminding me that wellbeing is not just individual, but collective.
I am a Regional Programme Advisor in the CCDHB Green Prescription team, covering areas from Wellington through to Waikanae. My role involves offering personalised support to help individuals incorporate physical activity into their daily lives, make healthier nutrition choices, and build community connections.
I previously worked as a Community Development Officer for Wellington North Badminton and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Psychology at Victoria University.
I studied health psychology because I wanted to help improve hauora in my community. When I saw the Regional Programme Advisor role, it aligned perfectly with what I wanted to do. What I enjoy most about working at Nuku Ora is the strong sense of support and the collaborative environment where people work together in different ways toward the same outcome.

“I love getting active outdoors - whether it’s a run through the bush or a cruisy walk by the moana"
Being active has always been my happy place - whether it's playing sport, swimming in the ocean, or a hīkoi up Kaukau maunga. And for me, it’s about more than just movement. It’s brought lifelong friendships and taught me a heap of life and leadership skills.
My favourite place to exercise is Ōtari-Wilton's Bush, the native birds, the water, it fills the wairua cup! I’m also a big fan of the gym and netball.
After studying Sport Science at university back home in England, I’ve worked in a range of roles including a coach, PE teacher, and a Serious Crimes Victim Advisor. While each role has been quite different, they’ve all shared a focus on people and wellbeing at the centre.
I first joined Nuku Ora in 2020, drawn by the opportunity to contribute to community wellbeing, especially with young people at the heart of the mahi. The passion our kaimahi have for their work and the people they serve is something special - it’s an organisation full of good humans.

“Football and anything in te taiao (nature)”
Physical activity is flexible as it gives you the opportunity to move in whatever way suits you, whether that’s for enjoyment, to attain something that you value, or for a challenge.
Movement is a platform for all aspects of wellbeing - physical, social, spiritual, and mental - and also provides a chance to connect with te taiao (nature). Exploring this link between movement and wellbeing is a big driver of my mahi. I enjoy staying active in te taiao and in ways that are playful and exploratory.
My background is in research, with a PhD in exercise motivation from the University of Otago. In my role here as Partnerships Manager, I help to support communities' access to pūtea through the Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa fund, helping keep tamariki and rangatahi active. I also support the activation of both built and natural spaces and places around our rohe. This involves listening closely to communities to understand how we can awhi their aspirations for movement in their own backyards.
I joined Nuku Ora after connecting with several kaimahi through shared kaupapa - and was excited by the organisation’s vision and approach. What keeps me here are the amazing people and the shared passion for movement and wellbeing.

Being physically active helps me to be the best person I can be and supports my mental health too.
I have the privilege of working alongside a dedicated team that is deeply passionate about enhancing the wellbeing of our communities, primarily through sport and active recreation. I am passionate about the positive impact that sport and recreation have on both individuals and communities, and I’ve been fortunate to build a career in this sector. Following my studies, I have gained experience across a range of organisations, including recreational providers, local government, industry training organisations, and a regional sports organisation.

“Group fitness classes”
Teaching group fitness in the evenings four times a week is a highlight of my week! The classes I teach range from dance fitness through to music-led, high-intensity strength programmes.
Wellbeing encompasses physical, mental, emotional, and social health - all of which improve our overall quality of life. Being physically active not only reduces our risk of major illnesses and ailments but also has a massive impact on mental and emotional health. In short, it makes me happy and works as a powerful stress release!
At Nuku Ora, I work in the Community Strength and Balance space, supporting the community and, in particular, supporting kaumātua and older adults. My role involves delivering falls prevention presentations, providing information about Strength and Balance classes in local areas, developing Strength and Balance programmes for communities, accrediting group fitness classes for older adults, and coordinating our Senior Regional Games and Have a Go events.
While originally a project management professional in the finance industry, I had a background in dance, running my own dance school in my teens. This passion was reignited after I had my children, and I entered the fitness industry in 2007, initially as a Group Fitness Manager and eventually becoming Head of Fitness Services at a Wellington gym. Since then, I’ve run my own group fitness and recreational sport businesses, and more recently, was a Sports Coordinator in the college sport space.

“Playing and refereeing football”
Physical activity is important to me because it’s a chance to connect with friends, have fun, focus on myself, and be a role model for my kids to stay active. I’m originally from Wallington, England, and proudly support Charlton Athletic Football Club.
At Nuku Ora, I oversee our work in coach development, supporting both our Coach Developer Network (those who coach the coaches) as well as student and adult coaches across the region. My role also involves working alongside regional sports organisations that are adopting Balance is Better principles or developing their approach to the Sport Pathways Framework. Looking ahead, we’re also exploring ways to better support sports officials.
Before joining Nuku Ora, I spent 11 years as Director of Sport and Recreation at Newlands College, and previously held roles at Skills Active Aotearoa, Volleyball NZ, and England Hockey.
What drew me to this role was the opportunity to support and influence how sport is delivered across the region, helping create positive experiences for our rangatahi, while building the capacity and capability of the people behind those opportunities.

At Nuku Ora, my role involves supporting the sporting sector to improve capability and capacity, specifically in the areas of governance, leadership, and volunteers. I see myself as a conduit, helping to connect organisations, people, and subject matter experts.
I’ve been involved in basketball for many years, both as a coach and an administrator. I’ve held roles at Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) on two occasions and have served on the boards and committees of several basketball associations. I also spent over a decade working in the disability sector, with both Workbridge and IDEA Services.
I joined Nuku Ora because I saw the opportunity to continue contributing to the development of the sporting sector across multiple levels.
One of the most rewarding and unexpected parts of my journey here has been embracing te reo Māori - learning tikanga and te reo has been both enriching and humbling.

“Football”
Nō Te Whanganui-a-Tara ahau. Ko tangata tiriti ahau. I am grateful to serve the community I grew up in.
Physical activity is a key part of my overall hauora, particularly for my mental wellbeing - as the saying goes, “move your body, move your mind.” If I’m not playing football, you’ll likely find me hiking in the ngahere or maunga or strolling along my local beach at Lyall Bay.
My background is in community development, and I hold a BA in Cultural Anthropology and Geography. In my role at Nuku Ora, I support our partners and communities on all things related to facilities. I focus on increasing participation in physical activity through equitable and inclusive access to appropriate spaces, advocating for community needs, sustainability, and inclusive design.
Reach out to me if you need support with facilities challenges or ideas! I also wear another ‘hat’ here - leading our women and girls advocacy work.
Nuku Ora’s vision is deeply aligned with my values, but what makes it truly special is the people - we really are like a whānau. I’m also proud to be part of an organisation committed to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi through both individual and collective mahi.

“Bush walks with my dog”
Physical activity and movement keep me feeling healthy, both mentally and physically, and I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact it can have on overall hauora.
As the Marketing and Communications Manager, I lead this function at Nuku Ora. Whether it’s developing strategy or bringing it to life through storytelling and campaigns, I’ve always been passionate about using communications to grow awareness and drive impact. Throughout my career across not-for-profit organisations, I’ve been fortunate to work for causes I believe in - organisations focused on supporting people and communities to live better lives.
Working at Nuku Ora means being part of something that genuinely makes a difference. I’m proud to contribute by using my skills to amplify the incredible mahi happening across the organisation. It’s a privilege to work alongside passionate people who are focused on creating meaningful impact for communities across our rohe.

“Tramping and any water activity”
I love a range of movement types because they strengthen the different walls of my whare. From building my taha hinengaro through something challenging like running or strength training, connecting my taha wairua through yoga and tramping, or - best of all - fostering my taha whānau by gardening with my parents, dancing with my friends and (badly!) surfing with my partner, movement plays a meaningful role in my life.
In my mahi, I help turn empowered community voices into actionable insights. I collaborate with our internal and external stakeholders through this process, so please reach out if you need support.
Before joining Nuku Ora, I worked at the Ministry of Social Development for two years after completing my degree at Victoria University of Wellington.
Why I enjoy working at Nuku Ora: he tangata - it is always the people!

“Walking with friends and gardening”
It's great to be outside in nature – that’s where I feel most relaxed.
At Nuku Ora, I process payroll as well as accounts payable and receivable. I’ve always worked with numbers, with experience in high street and merchant banks and large multinational corporates. Safe to say - I prefer numbers to words!
I stepped into this role after taking time out to be a stay-at-home mum and was looking for a part-time opportunity that offered balance. I really enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and flexibility at Nuku Ora - it’s a great fit for this stage of life.

“Running, surfing and hiking.”
Physical activity is important to me because I can always count on it to boost my mood and get the endorphins pumping! I also love how it pushes me out of my comfort zone—because that’s where growth happens.
As part of the marketing and communications team, my focus is on telling the story of Nuku Ora. This involves working with the team to write stories and create promotional material that communicates the awesome mahi happening across the organisation. I also manage our social media channels, so reach out if you have a great story to share that emerged with support from Nuku Ora, or for anything in the social space.
After completing my degree at the University of Otago in Dunedin, I was stoked to jump into a role where I could put my studies into practice! I was drawn to Nuku Ora because it aligns with so many of my values. I know how good being active makes me feel, so I love being able to help others reap the same benefits. I’m also grateful to work for an organisation passionate about making a difference for communities across Pōneke.

"Walking and exercycling"
Physical activity and hauora are important to me because of the tangible benefits they provide for both my physical and mental wellbeing.
In my role, I focus on researching, planning and writing strategies and frameworks, while also engaging in future planning and trend analysis to support sector development. I began my career in teaching before moving into sports administration while overseas. I then spent almost 20 years working for Sport NZ and its predecessors, before starting at Nuku Ora in areas such as participation, growth, strategy and policy.
I was drawn to Nuku Ora by the opportunity to work closer to where people participate and help influence what great experiences in physical activity could look like. I love working with so many capable and passionate people.

“Pickleball and golf”
Physical activity and wellbeing are important to me because they keep me fit, motivated, and connected with friends.
As Finance Manager at Nuku Ora, I support all things financial, including grants, financial statements, and audit processes.
Previously, I’ve worked in finance roles at Wellington Rugby/Hurricanes, St James Theatre, and Quitline, but what drew me to Nuku Ora was a strong desire to reconnect with the sport and recreation sector. I really enjoy the people and the culture here, and I identify strongly with Nuku Ora’s purpose - to make the Wellington region more active.

“Walking in nature”
My favourite way to stay active is walking in nature - it helps me clear my head, breathe deeply, and recharge. I enjoy activities that don’t feel like exercise but still get me moving, such as exploring new places or playing with my daughter. I’ve found that taking care of my physical health has a direct impact on my mental and emotional well-being. Staying active boosts my mood, energy, and helps me feel more balanced and connected.
I’m the Executive Assistant to the CEO and Administration Manager at Nuku Ora. I manage schedules, communications, and team support. With a background in hotel management and community recreation, I bring strong organisational and people-focused skills.
I was drawn to Nuku Ora for its commitment to community wellbeing, which aligns with my values around health, inclusion, and connection. It’s inspiring to be part of an organisation that’s making a real impact in people’s lives, and where I can contribute meaningfully behind the scenes.
I come from a multicultural background that values family, nature, and community. These roots influence how I show up at work - with empathy, adaptability, and a strong drive to support others. My whānau inspires me to lead with kindness and stay grounded in everything I do.
