Quality Youth Experiences

At Nuku Ora, we’re committed to helping tamariki and rangatahi thrive through positive, inclusive, and meaningful opportunities to be active - whether that’s through active recreation, sport, or beyond.

Youth Development and
Rangatahi Voice

Sport isn’t the only way for rangatahi to stay active, and we know that participation in physical activity is declining for this age group. The Voice of Rangatahi 2023 survey told us that young people want more fun, more variety, and to feel more supported.

By listening to rangatahi and acting on their feedback, we can lift engagement and co-create opportunities that feel relevant and empowering. Nuku Ora encourages organisations to centre rangatahi voice using the Mana Taiohi framework - a strengths-based, Te Ao Māori-informed approach that recognises and uplifts the mana of young people.

Creating Better Experiences for Young People in Sport

Balance is Better is a nationwide approach that focuses on creating quality, youth-focused experiences in sport. It encourages long-term participation and enjoyment, shifting the focus away from early success, pressure to win, or one-sport-only mindsets.

By supporting better coaching, fairer competitions, and more positive environments, Balance Better helps ensure all tamariki and rangatahi, regardless of ability or motivation, can thrive in sport and stay active for life.

Exploring Your Own Path in Sport

The Sport Pathways Framework recognises that every young person’s journey in sport is different - and that’s something to be celebrated.

Sport can offer far more than just a route to high performance. It’s also about fun, friendship, confidence, leadership, and personal development. Whether rangatahi choose to play socially, compete, coach, volunteer, or lead, there’s a place for everyone.

The sport pathway in Aotearoa is flexible and inclusive, helping young people explore, grow, and find what works best for them.
