Tākaro (Play)

Creating a Thriving Tākaro Culture for Tamariki and Whānau

At Nuku Ora, we believe every child and whānau deserves access to fun, inclusive, and meaningful tākaro (play) experiences. Our goal is to create a play culture where tamariki feel safe to express their unique identities, their wellbeing is supported, and their connection to the environment and community is strengthened.

We take a whānau-led approach, working alongside whānau, parents, caregivers, and the wider community to ensure that play is inclusive, culturally respectful, community-driven and forward-thinking. By aligning our efforts, we create a lasting impact across our rōhe.

Our Commitment to Tākaro

Inclusivity and Equity

We advocate for policies and practices that give all whānau, regardless of background, equal access to tākaro opportunities. This means prioritising accessibility, removing barriers, and ensuring fair participation for everyone.

Cultural Integration

By embedding Te Ao Māori values and practices into tākaro, we create spaces that respect and honour cultural heritage. Integrating Māori traditions strengthens cultural connections and promotes respect for diversity.

Community Engagement

Strong relationships with whānau, local groups, and community leaders help shape play experiences that truly reflect community needs. We listen, collaborate, and co-design initiatives that are meaningful and impactful.

Innovation

We support and introduce new innovative models, and practices to ensure tākaro remains dynamic, relevant, and inclusive for future generations.
