Healthy Active Learning

He oranga tamariki, he oranga anamata
A healthy child is a healthy future

Tamariki deserve the best start in life, which is why Sport New Zealand partnered with Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand) and the Ministry of Education to launch the nationwide Healthy Active Learning initiative. At Nuku Ora, our Healthy Active Learning team leads this initiative across the Wider Wellington Region, supporting schools and kura to create healthier, more active learning environments.

Our Vision

The vision of Healthy Active Learning is to improve tamariki wellbeing through quality physical activity, healthy eating and drinking.

Our Healthy Active Learning kaupapa means we provide free, tailored support to schools and kura through our team of facilitators. We work alongside school leadership, kaiako, and whānau to strengthen systems, structures, and processes that encourage quality physical activity and nutrition in education settings.

Bringing Healthy Active Learning to Life

Evidence shows that children's nutrition and physical activity are closely linked to academic achievement and overall physical and mental wellbeing. By prioritising these areas, we are fostering a healthier, happier future for tamariki across our rohe.

We support schools and kura to create environments where:

01

Education settings value and prioritise quality play, active recreation, sport and health and physical education.

02

Education settings support and promote quality food and drink environments.

03

Education settings value mātauranga Māori and promote culturally distinctive approaches to play, active recreation, sport, kai and inu, and curriculum delivery.

04

Teachers and kaiako implement active teaching and learning approaches and quality health and physical education.

05

Education settings work effectively with whānau and their local community to enable inclusive and equitable access to play, active recreation, sport, and quality food and drink.
