Active Recreation for Rangatahi

Active recreation is non-competitive physical activity done for enjoyment and personal wellbeing. It includes activities such as walking, swimming, cycling, equipment-based exercise, surfing, running, and yoga.

For many rangatahi, traditional sport no longer aligns with their interests or needs. Active recreation offers a flexible, participant-led alternative - empowering young people to be active in ways that are fun, inclusive, and meaningful to them.

Active recreation also plays a powerful role in supporting holistic wellbeing, nurturing all aspects of Te Whare Tapa Whā - taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing), taha tinana (physical wellbeing), and taha whānau (family and social wellbeing), all grounded in our connection to whenua (the land).

At Nuku Ora, we're committed to empowering tamariki and rangatahi by promoting active recreation opportunities that resonate with their diverse lifestyles. We’re working to reduce the drop-off in physical activity by supporting accessible, inclusive experiences that help young people thrive.
