About Healthy Active Learning

Healthy Active Learning is a joint government initiative between Sport New Zealand and the Ministries of Health and Education to improve the wellbeing of tamariki through healthy eating, drinking and quality physical activity. This is driven by a $47m Government commitment to the Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy.

Our team work with school leaders and teachers to support the provision of play, sport and physical education. We take a needs-based approach and aim to build upon good existing practice and upskill teachers to be more competent and confident in delivering high-quality physical activity experiences.

The following are some examples of support the team offers to schools and kura:

Healthy Active Learning Success Stories and Updates

Healthy Active Learning - Bike Your Backyard 2022

Wainuiomata kids hit the streets in a successful event promoting the importance of active travel for tamariki. Year six students from various Wainuiomata Primary Schools participated in a fun day of riding in their community visiting their neighbouring kura to play games and enjoy some kai. This helped to increase students’ confidence and road safety awareness as they prepare for intermediate next year.

Miramar Schools Healthy Active Learning Day

140 students from Miramar Christian School, Miramar Central School and Holy Cross School came together for a full day of Healthy Active Learning!

As a normal school day with a “twist”, students learnt about topics across the curriculum, however, each ‘lesson’ was presented through a well-being lens. A huge thank you to Garden to Table, Pedal Ready, Cricket Wellington and Team Energize for running a range of awesome activities for tamariki to participate in.

Kai & Hauora at Wilford School

This term our Healthy Active Learning team wrapped up our first ever Kai and Hauora Programme, delivered at Wilford School.

This programme involved various sessions across six weeks, covering a range of learnings through fun and engaging practical activities. Tamariki were able to put their kitchen skills to the test by preparing kai each week, with the final week seeing them cook a meal for a friend.

Healthy Active Learning - Phase 1 Lead Teacher Wānanga

Nuku Ora Community Connectors brought together teachers from across Pōneke to share, learn and connect with others around some interesting and common school setting topics. A big thank you to those who joined us to grow this kōrero!

Cross Country Revamp at St Anne's School 2022

As part of the Healthy Active Learning initiative, recognising leadership within our school communities is something Nuku Ora works hard to encourage and support.

Student Leadership Workshops in Schools 2022

Two schools chose to implement the Physical Activity Leaders (PAL’s) programme, Miramar Central School however wanted to do something different. Tania (Healthy Learning Advisor) ran a 3-hour workshop with the students incorporating activities on leadership, teamwork, and communication. The children had an amazing morning learning through fun games and group work activities!
